The Indigo side of Munich Fabric Start

This season, we decided to attend the german Denim trade-show « Blue Zone ». As there is no more Denim trade-show in Paris, this Munich trade-show has become an important destination for more then only central, nothern and eastern european designers, buyers & brands… It has also become an important denim-destination for jeans-manufacturers from north africa and all over the world. So we went and checked the « Munich denim-experience ».

Blue Zone :

Located in the north of the Munich Order Center ( MOC ), the Munich Fabric Start tradeshow is devided in 2 areas : The « Munich Fabric start » focusing on « ready-to-wear fabrics », is situated in the huge brand new MOC halls, while « Bluezone » , the denim show, is located on the other side of the street, in an authentic vintage industrial hall called Zenith, which fits perfectly with Denim. When the place is not dedicated to Denim, many rock bands are performing concerts there.

 

In terms of size and exhibitors, to give you an idea, Bluezone is almost twice as big as a typical « Kingpin show », but has less exhibitors than the last « Denim by PV ».

 

Candiani, Isko, Bossa, Royo, Tavex, Uco, Calik, Berto, Cappio… teamed up with mills and manufacturers from all over the world.… At Bluezone, a total of 80 exhibitors showed their denim knowhow. From Denim fabrics, to trimmings, from B-to-B media, to design studios, from manufacturers to laundries. The whole supply chain was there. Anything you need to make your denim range come true !

 

2 main trendzones helped the visitors to focus on their needs and to highlight the trends.

• The “Green zone“ focused on organic fibres, recycled fabrications, water savings, eco trimmings…

• The “Denim Extremes“ zone featured a great selection of trend-driven fabrics & finishes… extreme bleaches, extreme patching, extreme grindings, extreme coatings, extreme abstracted…

We could clearly see confirmed our gut-feelings, that something new was happening in the denim world. Sport, comfort and dying creativity, seem to overtake many purist vintage-inspirations.

Situated in Munich / Bavaria, the trade-show crowd seemed very disciplined. We haven’t witnessed any « mass-moves », but the contact between «visitors » and « exhibitors » was quality driven. Few words and big contracts…..

 

Interesting highlights :

The Monsieur-T. denim & bottoms studio :

This season, the  Parisian Denim Design Studio, Monsieur-T. exhibited at the Blue Zone.

Located on the « Bluestage », which overhang the whole hall, the studio offered an interesting denim think-tank area :

A mens & womens moodboard, dealing with « sci-fi Boro » and « punkish fluos »

An authentic french vintage workwear exhibition made in collaboration with Brut-clothing.

A chill-out area, to let people sit, connect, drink coffees, talk, work, recharge their smartphone batteries…

Munich Fabric Start :

A huge and impressive « ready to wear » fabric tradeshow with all main fabric exhibitors, relevant trend zones, seminars, conferences & services. We think that the combo of both shows is definitively worth a trip !

When in Munich / Just in case :

Here is a shortlist of the places we tested for you. Be careful, you are in Bavaria here, a very « traditional and catholic » state, all restaurants are closing early.

• Zum goldenen Kalb: A classic… an amazing Meat Restaurant. Great « Brasserie » design, close to Viktualienmarkt. Utzschneiderstraße 1   80469 München

• Birreria é Trattoria Seerose : A real Italian team, great Italian food, great authentic restaurant design. Feilitzschstraße 32 – 80802 München

• And don’t forget to eat a fresh Butter-Bretzen’ for breakfast ( Yes, they say « Bretzen’ » in Bavaria….), a must have !
